If you’re a history buff or moving to Nolensville soon, you’ll be fascinated with the town’s past. From early settlement to Civil War battles, Nolensville has a lot to tell. This blog post will be your guide to learning the history of Nolensville TN.

Nolensville TN was founded by the Nolens, who arrived in the area of Williamson County in the early 19th century. William Nolen and his brother, John, built a water mill and founded the town, which was originally known as Nolen’s Mill. Nolen hired a surveyor, William Snyder, to lay out the streets of the town. This is why Nolensville has a strange grid system that doesn’t quite make sense. Snyder didn’t have a straightedge, so he used his pocketknife to measure.

During the Civil War, Nolensville was occupied by both Confederate and Union troops. The town was used as a strategic point for Confederate troops to ambush Union supply trains traveling along the Nashville and Decatur railroads. During the Battle of Nolensville, a significant Confederate victory, they were able to capture Union supplies and prisoners. Today, you can see markers commemorating this battle at Nolensville town hall and along the battlefield’s border.

The town’s namesake, William Nolen, was one of the wealthiest men in Nolensville during his lifetime. William’s mansion, which dates back to 1830, still stands today. Today, the mansion—known as the Nolensville home—is open to the public, providing visitors with a glimpse into life in rural Tennessee during the 19th century. Inside the mansion, guests can see original cast iron doors and windows, hand-hewn beams, and many other stunning features that recall Nolensville’s storied past.

One part of Nolensville’s history that many locals may be unaware of is Ingram Hall. This was once the site of the Nolensville Colored School, which was established around 1880. This school was built on the same site where Slaves had once lived. Though the school only supported young Black Americans, it was technically the primary opportunity for education for Black children in Nolensville and surrounding areas until well into the 1960s.
